2025 Winternship Program

FMS Winternships are intensive internships that offer students immersive experiences in prestigious media organizations across the country. Winternships provide valuable real-world training in various media sectors, such as filmmaking, television, radio, advertising, marketing, public relations, digital media, and journalism. Participants engage in special projects, shadow professionals, and actively participate in the daily operations of their assigned sites.

Winternships take place over winter break, typically last 1-2 weeks, and may take place in-person, hybrid, or remotely. Some Winternships may also be offered for course credit.

Applicants must meet specific academic criteria, have relevant coursework in media studies, and submit well-researched and thought-provoking essays tailored to each Winternship site. Sites are listed below - you may choose 1-2 specific sites to apply to. Please read the descriptions carefully to learn about what each site is offering before choosing and submitting your application.

Open to all Tufts University undergraduate students. You do not need to be an FMS major or minor to apply.

Applications are due November 12, 2024 by 11:59 pm.

Essay

ESSAY Prompt
Why are you interested in this particular Winternship opportunity and career field?

Essay Requirements

  • 300 words or less.

  • Submit individual, unique essay for each site if you apply to more than one site.

  • Tailor each essay to the specific site you are applying to, rather than writing one general essay for all sites.

  • Address the following in your essay:

    • What experience and/or interests do you have that make you a good candidate for this position?

    • What do you hope to gain from this Winternship experience?

    • How does this opportunity relate to your liberal arts education?

Essay Submission

  • Include your name and the name of the Winternship site you are applying to on the essay

  • Export the essay to PDF if possible

  • Submit on Interfolio (instructions below)

Application Instructions

The Winternship application includes two parts - an online application and a document upload. BOTH steps must be taken to apply.

Part 1:

Complete the online application (site choices will be requested here)

Part 2:

Upload the following documents to Interfolio:

  1. Resume

  2. Tufts unofficial transcript (available on SIS)

  3. Essay(s) - one for each site you are applying to. Please note: if you are submitting more than one essay, you can submit second essay as an additional document.

Please note: you will be prompted to answer questions regarding Tufts employment - this is irrelevant to this application (but is required in Interfolio). Please fill it out; however, it has no weight on your application.

Important Additional Requirements

  • If selected for a site that requires credit, you must enroll in the one-credit internship course (FMS-0099-03) during the Spring 2023 semester.

  • International students are welcome to apply. However, due to CPT regulations, if accepted, you must enroll in the one-credit internship course (FMS-0099-03), even if the site does not require credit.

  • Do not contact the sites independently for information or applications. All applications must be submitted through FMS. Contacting the sites directly will result in disqualification from the Winternship program.

  • Please complete and submit your applications on time. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. If you have a special circumstance that prevents you from submitting on time, please reach out to leslie.goldberg@tufts.edu.

Testimonial
Sam Dieringer

If I could describe my GBH winternship experience in three words, it would be surprising, fast-paced, and helpful. GBH immediately thrusted me in the dynamic, fast-paced environment of a major newsroom, strengthened preexisting aspects of my reporting, and introduced me to new forms of multimedia journalism. This experience helped me better recognize my current place in the media industry, supplied me with many new connections in the Boston area, and honed in on my specific interests in broadcast.
